Dear Mr. Carroll, 

 

Miss Burch has already written to you on my behalf about the copy of The Waste Land which you returned.  I can only say that I agree with everything which she wrote and I consider it absolutely monstrous to borrow a first edition of a book, which was in perfect condition, and then permanently to disfigure the binding.
