Dear Sirs,
I enclose MS [manuscript] of a book and shall be obliged if you will give me an approximate estimate for printing and binding. The estimate must be approximate because there will be an introduction and I am not sure at present of the length. Will you allow in the introduction for estimate for 16 pages of introduction, and also for four pp. additional matter at end?
I should like the book to be foolscap 8vo [octavo], printed in Caslon 10 pt. solid, 30 lines in the page of actual text excluding headline and number, the number to be at foot of page, the headlines to be between thing rules. The length of line should be 16 picas. The margin at the top of page 1/2". The margin at inside of page also 1/2". The paper a good quality imitation hand made laid. 1000 copies to be printed and 400 bound. The binding to be in marbles cloth or similar patterned cloth with label on spine. Perhaps if we get as far, you would send me patterns of such cloths to choose from?
If the estimate is satisfactory , I think it may be advisable to have the book set at once and proofs sent in galley without waiting for the introduction as the translators live in France and there might be delay with the proofs. I am anxious to get the book out as early as possible in the autumn.
Would you note to address all correspondence re this book until further notice to me personally at Monk's House, Rodmell, near Lewes, Sussex.
Yours faithfully | Leonard Woolf [signature]
