Dear Madam,

In reply to your letter of April 27th, addressed to Mr. Lehmann, before we can make any decision as to what fee to charge, we are afraid that we must know exactly what material from Anton Tchekhov’s Notebook, the copy-right of which belongs to, us Penguin Books propose to republish. We shall be glad to let you have a copy of New Writing if you will tell us which number it is you require, and providing that that number is still in print.

Yours faithfully, for The Hogarth Press,
