I have told Clark to go ahead with the setting at once. Three copies of proofs will be sent direct to you. Will you correct them, keep two copies yourself, and send me one corrected copy with as little delay as possible.

I have sent the maps to Clark, but I did not send the originals as if they are to be redrawn, they ought to be redrawn from the sketches -- otherwise there may be confusion. The sketches are not bad, and quite good enough for a skilled mant to redraw from.

Now about numbers to be printed. You could certainly reprint a second edition of 1000 copies for £85 as against £185 for the first edition because you save the whole of the cost of composition which is £124, though you may have to set off against that the cost of getting the whole thing ready again. There is however this to remember. I think you greatly overestimated the length of your last two chapters. This should make some saving on the estimate. Again if you decide not to have an index, you will save something there. The initial cost might therefore be rather lower and the whole book less than 424 pages. My own feeling is this: if you are going to charge 12/6 for the book, it might be just worth while printing the 1550 copies; if you are going to charge 15/-, I should only print 1050. If the book is 400 pages in length, I don't think that 15/- is too high in comparison with the ordinary price of books now. You will probably sell more at 12/6 than at 15/-, but not a very great many more. Let me know your decision, but there is no violent hurry about this point. If you let me know in a week or ten days that will be ample time.

As regards the index, I think a book of this sort ought to have an index, but it is not essential. Let me know your final decision about this soon as I ought to let the printer know in order that he may know what his number of sheets will be.
