Dear Leys,

I looked into the Esat [sic] African Standard business when I was up yesterday. I find that my memory was not quite accurate. On February 21 we sent a four inch advertisement to them with instructions to insert it twice in the paper (publishers do not pay for advertisements in advance, so that we did not send money with it). As we heard nothing from them, we wrote again on June 24 (this was what I remembered doing) and asked them whether they had recieved the ad. and what had been done. We have had not reply to this letter.

What I should propose with regard to the U.S.A. is to offer them to begin with 200 copies in sheets at £15 per 100. You would get £30 back which is just worth while and they would get the books very cheap. it would leave you with about 400 copies her here. If they wanted more later, and you still had them available we could give them more at the same price. A cheap edition here in April would be very complicated, as it would mean scrapping your present edition.
