Dear Sirs,
LIVING PAINTERS. VOL. I. DUNCAN GRANT.
We are going to produce the first volume of what, we hope, will be a series under the above title, and I should be much obliged if you would let me know whether you would undertake the printing and binding and whether, in that case, you could let me have a rough estimate of the cost.
The book is to be Crown 4to and will consist of a short introduction of say at most 8 pages, and 24 half-tone reproductions. We would supply you with the half-tone blocks which average 6” by 4”. There would also be a list of the pictures giving date of painting of each and owners’ names. I think the introduction should probably be in 14 point Old Face Caslon or Garamond, if you have it. I do not know whether you would advise printing the name of the picture on the same page as the block or on a blank page facing the picture; if you could give me an idea of the difference which this would make in cost, I should be obliged.
The binding would be thick boards covered with paper, and, if necessary, cloth back and label on spine. We would supply a design for reproduction in line block and to be printed sign so that it fills the whole side of the cover up to the three edges of the book and the spine. I am not sure whether he should make his design exactly 10” by 7” or whether, unles [sic] he makes his dimensions slightly larger, it will cause diffic-ulties in binding. Perhaps you will be good enough to advise me on this point, as the artist is anxious to complete his design. I should like the paper for the cover to be cream colour and, if possible, of the texture of a Japanese vellum, but here again I am not sure whether you could obtain a paper of this kind which could be pasted over boards.

I should be obliged if you could give me the estimate for printing alternatively 1000 and 500 copies, and for binding 400 copies.
Yours faithfully | Leonard Woolf [signature]
