Originally titled 'The Democratisation of Books', this essay in the Day to Day Pamphlets series (no. 38) outline's Cole's thesis that the book-world was seeing a revolution in access and the consumption of books. 

Cole's research came from a series of articles published in the Listener between 22 December 1937 and 12 January 1938.
