A collection of autobiographies by working women, this volume is now most well known for Virginia Woolf's ambivalent introduction, which has been criticized as an indication of her snobbery and class-consciousness. Several unsold sheets were eventually sold to the Women's Co-Operative Guild who had an interest in the publication from the outset.
